After mainly digital work, we fabricated a physical sample of a bike-frame construction.
The sample is a structural cell from within the bike-frame pattern 1. It is composed of 5 parts that are connected at standard bike joints.
To compensate the varying diameters custom aluminum fittings are used to tie parts together using M10 threaded rods which are also used in bike wheel axes.
At connections to the saddle post, threaded rods extend to the full length.
The bottom bracket is replaced by an aluminum cylinder, serving as an anchor fixing the rod end. This way, the full frame is structural activated.
Even though the test has been successful, the joint design requires significant crafting and expert skills, making this design difficult to be scaled in order to fabricate larger structures. But it could be further developed.
